TAKE PRIDE IN
TITUSVILLE

In 1999, a few of the service clubs in
Titusville Pennsylvania realized that together
they could accomplish more
projects (and bigger projects) together than on an
individual basis. So Rotary Club, Kiwanis, and Lions Club members
started meeting to look at projects around the city. Their first project was working the food booth for the
Titusville Area Hospital's 100th Anniversary Celebration.
There was a community concert held at Robert's Grove
with the group, The Yardbirds, performing. The Take
Pride in Titusville Committee volunteered to provide the
concession stand and it proved to be a successful fundraiser.
Since then, the committee works the concession stand at
the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life and
performs two community cleanup days of the downtown
and municipal parks. Currently there are 22 groups
involved in the committee that meets the first Saturday of
each month at the
VFW at 9 am.
In 2003, then Recreation Director Tim McGregor asked
the committee asked the committee to get involved with a
drive-through holiday light display at Burgess Park. Fundraising
began with the assistance of the VFW. Holiday at Burgess has
become northwest Pennsylvania's shining jewel starting
the Friday after Thanksgiving through New Yew Year's
Eve Night. The hours are 6-9 pm, seven days a week with
Santa Clause on sight Friday and Saturday nights. This
commitment to the community by the committee has
included electrical upgrades to Burgess Park and new decorations
and electric infrastructure in the downtown area.
So enthused with the project that long time Plummer resident,
Carol McFadden, donated her large Christmas display
to the organization. The committee looks forward to
adding more decorations through the downtown and main
thoroughfare areas. Many grants have been written by area clubs
to raise funds with specific objectives in mind. One of the grants
was exclusively used for a locally manufactured Oil
Derrick replicated with a sprouting oil display at the top of
the Derrick in preparation for the Oil 150 celebration, a
sesquicentennial anniversary of the discovery of Oil, which
will take place the last week of August in 2009.
In conjunction with the VFW Post #5958, the Take
Pride in Titusville Committee holds three fundraising steak
fries throughout the year. The summer and fall steak fries
take place at the VFW Pavilion, west of Hydetown off of Route
408 and the Valentine’s Day steak fry takes place at the post on St. Johns Street in Titusville.
